Turnstyle Designs

Turnstyle Designs was created in 1992, after Stephen Roberts, left West London and eight years of the Fashion Trade for the splendours and freedom of North Devon. He and his wife moved to a tiny cottage and Stephen spent the first glorious year sculpting, experimenting with materials and researching a very dull and traditional Door Furniture industry. Convinced that there was a large gap in the market for imaginative door handles and other functional household fittings, the first range of a dozen designs of door handles, bases around a “Natural” theme was launched in October 1993.

Rough Cut, Polished Nickel Finish

Taking a totally new approach to an industry that has traditionally relied on mainly brass, Stephen wanted to introduce new materials and finishes as well as new designs, experimenting with a blend of resins and introducing a multitude of different fillers including, Bronze, Slate, Marble and Aluminium (often mixed as combinations) Turnstyle has developed unique composites that are durable, tactile and very attractive and unique with added advantages over most metals in weight and maintenance.
After a year of selling mainly via mail order, the collection was expanded into cabinet handles and bathroom fittings and the first trade catalogue was launched. The success of this enabled Stephen to move his family to a lovely farmhouse complete with ideal barns and outbuildings in the Taw Valley.

Early in 1997, the local village stores in Bishops Tawton (unused for over 3 years) was purchased and converted to offices, show room and warehouse, an unlikely use in an unusual setting but set between two pubs and overlooking the river an ideal place to work.

In 2000 Turnstyle was honoured with the prestigious Daily Telegraph Small Business of the Year award.

The collection has expanded tenfold introducing new material’s to compliment the composites, the Natural more quirky ranges have been dropped and replaced by more cutting edge, contemporary direction, with over 50% of the range being produced in leather. Employing a team of highly skilled saddlers and harness makers, the leather ranges cover every aspect of hardware and include both hand stitched and machine stitched parts.
Turnstyle is now considered the leading light when it comes to design led architectural ironmongery. They have a dedicated department that specializes in producing custom work to the customers requirements, with no minimum order this has become very popular with designers.
The company offers a one-stop shop for all interior fittings, including every aspect of door hardware, locks, hinges, a completely re-invented range of window fittings and electrical plates. Exporting to all over the world with distributors in USA (over 150
dealers), New Zealand, Australia, Greece, Egypt, Brazil and the Middle East as well as most of Europe, export now accounts for over 50% of the turnover. Turnstyle handles have been used on many beautiful houses, hotels including Malmaison Group, Royal Horse Guards Thistle, MGM Grand, Chelsea Football Club, De Vere Group, Palaces in the Middle East, restaurants, numerous super yachts, even museums and a school.
In 2002 Turnstyle Designs moved to a purpose built, set of warehouses, showroom and factory incorporating a showroom. Despite the economic downturn Turnstyle has continued to grow and is set for another good year ahead.
